Friends of Tomoka Basin State Parks

The Official Citizen Support Organization for the Tomoka Basin State Parks

History

Bulow Parks Historic Foundation Steering Committee at the Flagler County Historical Society Annex, 10/28/2012.

Facing state budget cuts that threatened the status of Bulow Creek State Park and Bulow Plantation Ruins Historic State Park, a group of local citizens involved with the Flagler County Historical Society started to discuss the idea of forming a citizen support organization for these two parks.

Led by James Fiske and Mike Evans, a steering committee was formed in October 2012. The steering committee consisted of a wide range of those dedicated to preserving and interpreting the history of the area including, Associate Professors Dr. Nancy Duke (history) and Dr. Brad Biglow (anthropology, historians Sisco Dean, William Lenssen, Ed Moore, Steven Jones, and Hewitt Dupont, anthropologist Abby Romaine, living historians James Bullock and James Fiske, archaeologist Toni Wallace, author Bill Ryan, educator Diane Marquis and the president of the Flagler County Historical Society, Mary Ann Clark.

By June 2013, Bulow Parks Historic Alliance, Inc. was established as the official citizen support organization for Bulow Creek State Park and Bulow Plantation Ruins Historic State Park. The Alliance was committed to telling the story of Bulow and sparking interest in the parks that would increase visitation and awareness of the rich history of the Bulow story.

In 2015, the Alliance expanded its support to include the three other Tomoka Basin State Parks, including Tomoka State Park, Haw Creek Preserve State Park, and Addison Blockhouse Preserve Historic State Park. As a result, the organization changed its name from the Bulow Parks Historic Alliance, Inc. to the Friends of Tomoka Basin State Parks.
